Spotlight:

Man on a music mission.

'Horizontal' Paul Simpson has spent the last 16 years unable to sit upright for long periods. He has spent that time pioneering a musical project which aims to open up musical avenues to those with disabilities. Here he tells his story.

“After 16 years of being horizontal due to a spinal injury, I am unable to sit upright for long periods which means I spend the vast majority of my time in bed after an accident whilst playing with my children.

I have worked hard to find ways of making life interesting to those around me. I have a saying that whether you like me or not I will touch your life, and that hesitation is a missed opportunity.

I started the Horizontal Paul Music Project www.horizontal-paul.com to encourage and inspire the disabled to be creative. I love music and writing songs, poetry, and stories. I had received encouragement for my music from Radio Derby presenter John Holmes who also gave me the "Horizontal Paul" nickname. I think it adds a little humour and breaks the ice nicely for me. I felt that if my music was successful I could finance medical treatment in America.

At the same time I could share my music and show the progress of my project online. It is important to me to show the good and the bad, and have kept a running diary online with the press cuttings and the disappointments. What becomes evident is that there is room for anyone in the music industry. If a song is good its good, whether you are disabled or not.

In my case my project has given me the opportunity to share my music. Without music I would not have been asked to be the subject of a "Face in the Crowd" documentary for News 24 that was probably the first positive documentary that I have ever seen. It was a pity that it was never shown prime time.

The bonus for me is that I can share so much with so many other people via the internet. I spend a lot of time working on my websites. Like many others, I have to watch the pennies and cannot spend the time I would like online, but what an adventure..!

Johnette Napolitano, an ex member of 80's super group "Talking Heads" is currently recording a song I wrote, after buying my self produced CD and liking the track. There is so much potential on the net as you never know who is visiting your website.

For those who are more technically minded, my best results so far have been 450,000 hits and nearly 4,000 individual visitors in a day. My project and I have recently been included in a government report by the Fabian Society (the governments Think Tank)

My most recent adventure has caused a lot of excitement. It is called the Moby Project, and is going to be a FREE Mobile Recording Studio facility for the disabled. It will be housed in an HGV Vehicle or Porta-Cabin transported to specific locations. We have a lot of work to do to present the best way forward, and would welcome any advice on choice of vehicle, and equipment.

I personally had such a hard time trying to get a recording to present to Radio Derby, and mobile studios let me down so many times that I built my own. I did not want others to go through the same difficulties as I did, so I am doing my best to change that. We plan to offer engineering and medical assistance to those who need additional help.

The idea has received a lot of interest, and we are in the process of setting up the Moby Project as a charity. We hope that the music industry, and celebrities will come on board to make the project a success.

We have been sponsored with a dedicated website which is currently under construction. I would like to invite visitors to come and visit my website. I am sure you will find it interesting and entertaining. I will answer all emails and help in any way I can. Perhaps its time to make a change in your life ? You might have a talent as yet undiscovered that you can share.”
