IB denial

The Government has denied claims that rules aimed at reassessing Incapacity Benefit claimants may fail to help people get more benefits because they focused on finding them work.

The new rules come into effect in 50 areas starting in October.

Claimants will have a work-focused interview during their initial claim and will not go for more than three years without having a further work-focused interview, a medical assessment, or both.

Disability groups fear that the emphasis will be on getting people back to work, rather than helping them find out whether they are getting all the benefits or other support that they might be entitled to.

Mike Hurdiss, benefits policy officer at Scope, said: ?All the benchmarks are getting into work or moving towards work. There is very little emphasis on identifying people's proper entitlements.?

A spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions said there would be no help to ensure people were getting the right benefits.
