New story for Tories
Disability campaigners have urged new Tory party leader Iain Duncan Smith to fight against any proposed cuts to disability benefits. Mr Duncan Smith beat Ken Clarke in the Conservative party leadership battle in September. He has a history of opposing cuts in benefits. He voted against the Welfare Reform Bill, which proposed reducing the rate of Incapacity Benefit for new claimants if they had a pension. John Knight, head of external policy at Leonard Cheshire, said: ?I hope he will carry forward those views he held as a backbencher and resist any attempts by the government to cut disability benefits.? The call comes amid mounting concern over Government attacks on disability benefits. Meanwhile, Tim Boswell has been reappointed Tory spokesman for people with disabilities.
