Compensation for man barred from nightclub
A man who was refused entry to a nightclub because his skin condition might have ?upset? other customers, has won a ?2,000 compensation payout.
Ian Hunter, 20, was turned away from Bar Rio in Gillingham, Kent, by the bouncer, who said he could not enter because of his hands. Asked to explain further, the bouncer said: ?I can?t let you in with hands like that.?
Ian has the condition, epidermolysis bullosa, which gives him blisters on his hands, feet and neck.
When he called the bar the day after the refusal, manager Rachel Down said she had discussed the situation with colleagues and decided that it would not have been a ?good idea? to let Ian in because people may have attacked him.
She added that bar visitors might not want to drink from a glass he had used.
Ian said that the actions had been ?really humiliating?. Since being turned away, he says his confidence has been shattered.
The case was pursued by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) under the Disability Discrimination Act.
Bert Massie, Chair of the DRC, said: ?The inexcusable behaviour of managers at Bar Rio proves that prejudice is still with us.?
