Triathlon set for inclusion in Paralympics The number of Paralympic sports is set to grow yet again, with triathlon the latest in a long line of additions. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) have been pushing for the event to be included in the Paralympic Games since it became an official Olympic sport in Sydney last year. ?We will very seriously consider triathlon for a possible part of our program in the future,? said Bob Steadward, president of the International Paralympic Committee. ?You couldn?t ask for a better structure in sport. Olympic gold medallist Simon Whitfield will be running and right alongside will be some young high school kid who would love to be like him, and they get an opportunity to compete in the same environment. "I think that?s what makes triathlon not only such a unique sport but a really good sport when it comes to the whole philosophy of universality and sport for all. There?s a great representation there that most other sports don?t cater to.? If committee members choose to accept the event, it will first feature at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
