Mobility Roadshow Holiday Village Takes Off

This year's new Holiday Village addition to the Mobility Roadshow enlightened hundreds of disabled people who thought exciting adventure or long distance holidays were out of bounds.

One mother with a child with Cerebral Palsy was overwhelmed: "I never thought a family holiday was possible: coming to the show has given me so much confidence".

"This has opened my eyes to the world, we had no idea we could visit Egypt or South Africa in a wheelchair"

Co-ordinated by Accessible Travel & Leisure, a UK market leader in accessible holidays, there were over 30 accessible travel and holiday operators at the Roadshow, from as far afield as South Africa, Cyprus, the Canary Islands and Egypt.

"Cruising proved especially popular and although our focus was to provide information and raise awareness of the wide variety of accessible travel now available, business was brisk with serious bookings taken," commented Ali Parker, general manager, Accessible Travel & Leisure.

The company also chose the Roadshow to launch its new franchise scheme, ideal for disabled people for whom it is more convenient to work from home. Said managing director: Andy Wright, himself a wheelchair user: "We were overwhelmed with the favourable response - from visitors from Northern Ireland and Scotland as well as closer to home. We are now in discussion with potential partners."

InterContinental Hotel Group was delighted with the response to the launch of its new ceiling track hoist facilities designed to ease the transfer of a wheelchair user into bed or the bath.

"Visitors confirmed there is definitely substantial demand and many had not been aware of the roll-in showers at our Express by Holiday Inn properties," said Carleigh Chadwick, accessibility manager, UK and Ireland.

For the Mobility Roadshow, Jacqui Jones, director of projects & events, felt the new partnership had been extremely successful.

"Our intention is to continue to develop the Holiday Village concept each year. This is just one more aspect of our commitment to relentlessly push boundaries to deliver more opportunity and choice through enhanced mobility."
