Specialist providers and innovative solutions - the right approach to sustainable employment
Commenting on the DWP plans to improve the support available to help disabled and disadvantaged people into sustainable employment, Remploy's Director of Employment Services Beth Carruthers welcomed the statement as a major step in the right direction. Beth Carruthers said: "Remploy welcomes this announcement which aims to help many more people enjoy the benefits of a rewarding job rather than having to rely on benefits. Policy makers, local organisations and employers must now work together to ensure these steps deliver real progress on the ground. For the hardest to help groups, this means involving specialist organisations as early as possible, when expert, personalised support can add the greatest value." Welcoming the move to put private and voluntary sectors at the heart of delivery, she added: "Remploy and other specialist organisations have the experience and expertise to meet the complex and individual needs of disadvantaged people who still experience many barriers to employment. With the freedom to provide personalised, innovative solutions, we will be able to transform lives and help move the country towards the Government's goal of full employment. Currently, Remploy is helping thousands of people into work but with the help of these proposals, it could be tens of thousands." However, commenting on the 18 month period now proposed as an indicator of sustainable employment: "We believe that the 18 month period now proposed should be three years as originally proposed by David Freud. 18 months is too short to measure whether you have changed someone's life by reintegrating them into the world of work."
