Child play - Diabetes UK launches new online resource for children with diabetes and their parents.

Diabetes UK has launched a series of fun and informative activity sheets aimed at children with Type 1 diabetes under the age of 5 and their parents.

The sheets have different fun activities such as colouring in, puzzle, jigsaw and stories. Parents can work thorough the sheets with their children to help them understand a more about diabetes.

The free activity sheets are available to download on the Diabetes UK website at www.diabetes.org.uk/mylife-tots or can be ordered by calling freephone 0800 585 08 and quoting product code 9832.

There are currently around 1320 children with diabetes under the age of 5 in the UK.

Diabetes UK care advisor Libby Dowling who put the resource together says "Having diabetes has a huge impact on a child's life and it can be difficult for parents to explain to a young child the details of their condition. We hope that this resource will make it easier for parents to talk to their children about their condition in an informative but playful way.

"We have seen the number of children with diabetes under five-years-old with Type 1 diabetes increase five-fold over 20 years, so it is crucial that we produce resources that will help children with diabetes and their families. There is currently very little in term of information tools for the under-fives with diabetes, especially in this interactive form, and we hope that families will find it useful."

The online resource as been produced as part of the Diabetes UK 75 anniversary activities. 75 years ago on 10 January 1934 leading health charity Diabetes UK was formed by the novelist HG Wells - who most famously wrote The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds - and Dr RD Lawrence, both of whom had diabetes.

The charity's aim was to ensure that everyone in the UK could gain access to insulin, whatever their financial situation. This was a ground-breaking initiative prior to the existence of a national health service.

The organisation (previously called the Diabetic Association and then the British Diabetic Association) has always challenged ideas of how people with diabetes should be treated and from the start believed in support to enable active self-management of the condition.

The organisation actively campaigned for the establishment of the NHS and its underlying principles of partnership working proactive control and lobbying continue to this day.

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes is growing faster than ever as new statistics show that one person is diagnosed every three minutes with the condition in the UK.

Diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to long-term complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputation.

Short-term complications include hypoglycaemic episodes, known as 'hypos', which can lead to unconsciousness and hospitalisation if left untreated, and persistent high blood glucose levels can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) which if untreated can be fatal.
