Two Ticks symbol says NCIs are positive about abilities of applicants with disabilities

The Church of England's National Church Institutions (NCIs) have been awarded the Two Ticks disability symbol by Jobcentre Plus in recognition of their commitment to good practice in employing people with disabilities.

The award will help the NCIs build on the work already in place to ensure that staff and applicants with disabilities are welcomed and valued, and that accessibility is continuously improved.

To qualify for the Two Ticks symbol, the NCIs, which have incorporated policies and practices into their Equal Opportunities Policy over a number of years to support people with disabilities, have agreed to five commitments:

1. To interview all applicants with disabilities who meet the minimum criteria and consider them on their abilities.
2. To review the development needs of employees with disabilities at least once a year.
3. To make every effort to ensure employees can stay in employment if they become disabled.
4. To take action to develop disability awareness among key employees.
5. To review these commitments annually, to improve and publicise progress and future plans.

The award is reviewed annually, when employers have to demonstrate to Jobcentre Plus what action they have taken to meet these five commitments.

The presentation to the NCIs follows the Lambeth Seminar on Disability in May 2006, and a debate on disability at the General Synod of the Church of England in July 2007, where the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, challenged the Church of England to do more to support people with disabilities.

Su Morgan, Human Resources Director, NCIs, said: "We are proud to receive the Two Ticks symbol. It sends out a positive message about our commitment to support those with a disability and attract the widest pool of applicants. We would encourage the rest of the Church to show the same commitment to people with a disability."

Sue Henry, Disability Employment Adviser, Jobcentre Plus, said: "The NCIs submitted a very thorough and detailed application, and good practices were already in place, and so I?m sure the NCIs will continue to be an excellent employer, having been awarded the Two Ticks symbol."
