Redditch Borough Council pioneers flat-pack extension
A ground-breaking, flat pack home extension which can be re-used has been developed by a Redditch Borough Council officer. Steve Spurrier from the North Worcestershire Care and Repair Agency teamed up with Accessible Homes Ltd of Cradley Heath to develop the flat pack pod. It is a new method of providing adaptations for disabled people who require an extension to their property. The new flat pack pod will fit through a standard domestic doorway and is ready for use within a couple of weeks. When it's no longer needed, it can be taken apart and stored or re-sited at another property. The only wastage is the internal plasterboard and floor coverings. Steve Spurrier said: "Previously, pod extensions had to be delivered on lorries and craned in to properties. This was expensive, and in some cases, could lead to road closures. " "We were also not able to reuse them without again incurring the huge expense of cranes. The new pod is a cost-effective way to promote independent living. It will help people to live in their homes for as long as possible." A sample pod has been installed at the Telecare showflat in Mendip House, Church Hill, Redditch. It has been fitted out as a shower room, though the unit is also available as a double bedroom with ensuite shower room.
