Your Local Cinema .com

Over 100 cinemas in the U.K. can provide an audio description service to visually impaired people - audio described cinema enables visually impaired people to enjoy film, presented in its original, and best form - the cinema.

It's similar to listening to a cricket or football match on the radio, having the action described to you. Or like listening to an audio book on cassette. The normal film soundtrack comes through the cinemas surround sound speakers in the normal way and a recorded narrator explains what's happening on screen - in gaps in the dialogue - through personal headphones.

In a multiplex cinema the system is usually installed in one auditorium only, although some cinemas have installed it in more than one, and some have a portable version which can be moved from screen to screen. If 'a.d.' files are available for a film (which is usually the case for most popular films), then every screening of that film - in the auditorium with the system installed - can be an audio described show. The system does not interfere with 'normal' shows because the a.d. is broadcast through personal, wireless headphones.

Maria a cinema audio description user says "I went to see the Matrix Reloaded and thought the A.D. worked brilliantly with it! I thought the detail of the description was really amazing, and gave such a graphic sense of the action taking place, of which there was loads! I wanted to see how audio description worked with a film like this, as I'd seen the first film in the trilogy and new it was incredibly visual. I was really impressed!"

A.D. is also available on some videos, DVD's and is beginning to become popular on TV. The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have recently decided to use the Sky service for their a.d. output. This means that soon, a.d. will be available to anyone with Sky TV.
