Queen's award winners announced

Queen Recognises Community Stars Supporting the Disabled

Voluntary Groups supporting disabled members of the community across the UK have been chosen as winners of this year's prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, giving recognition to the 'stars' in our communities that play an essential role in our daily lives.

- Grow Limited was set up 22 years ago with the aim of aiding and supporting those with learning difficulties via occupational training. Grow Limited involves its members in the growing and selling of bedding plants, which it sells direct to the public from its premises in Le Coutanchez

- Worcestershire Pre-school Learning Alliance VIP Special Needs Scheme supports children under 5, who have a disability / serious illness to attend a local voluntary or private pre-school / nursery provision. This support is mainly provided by volunteers, who are recruited and trained by PLA staff to work on a one-one basis with individual children

- Waveney Stardust benefits disabled people of all ages, unable to embark on the surrounding waterways. It provides a purpose built 42ft day cruiser suited to four wheelchair users with all other aids necessary for day trips.

The above groups are 3 of 9 disability voluntary organisations to win an Award across the UK this year.

All winners have been nominated by members of the public who have either benefited from their work, or seen the positive effect on their community. The Award is only given to those groups where volunteers are judged to have regularly devoted their time to providing an outstanding level of help to other people.

Ed Miliband, Minister for the Third Sector, said: Ed Miliband, Minister for the Third Sector, said: "Winning a Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is a great achievement. The winning groups have all given so much to enrich the lives of others.

But even more than this, the work they do holds our society together by giving everyone the chance to be included in their community. We all benefit from the efforts and social conscience of volunteers across the country. They are a great example to us all."

If you know a volunteering group that are really making a difference to your community, then nomination forms for the 2008 Queen's Award for Voluntary Service are available from www.queensawardvoluntary.gov.uk or by calling 0845 000 2002.

The nomination period runs until 30 September 2007.
