First RYA club coaching course for disabled sailors
The RYA teamed up with the Challenger fleet at Oxford Sailing club recently to train six top sailors to become coaches. This is the first time the RYA Club coaching course has been run for disabled sailors with the aim of improving sailing and racing skills at grass roots level. Four out of the six sailors achieved the certificate on the two day course run by Duncan West of the RYA. Coaching training for RYA Sailability is funded by Skandia Sailing Club from money raised at their bi annual charity ball last year. Topics covered on the intensive weekend course, which saw challenging weather conditions, included risk assessment, sailing competencies, coaching on the water, practical on shore sessions, a presentation, Powerboat level 2 and first aid. A couple of aspects of the course had to be modified to accommodate varying degrees of mobility. The four new coaches were later presented with a polo shirt and fleece by Debbie Blachford, RYA Sailability manager. John Draper, 62, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis decided to go on the course to help younger sailors improve their skills. He comments - 'I wasn't sure if I would physically manage certain aspects of the course but I really enjoyed it. The course has given us credibility and status within the fleet. I am passionate about Challengers and have already got my first student lined up for training.' Val Millward, past National Challenger Champion adds - 'Having completed the course successfully I hope to be able to use this to raise the standard of sailing in the Challenger Fleet and improve the skills of those who race. Eventually the baton will pass to our future sailors and I would like to think that I can be a part of their development' www.rya.org.uk/sailability
