Sir Menzies Campbell presents Motability car to Fife resident

The Rt Hon Sir Menzies Campbell CBE QC MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, presented the key of a new Motability car to one of his constituents, Norrie McArthur, on Friday 16 March 2007.

The presentation took place at 12.30pm at Evans Halshaw Ford Cupar, Eastbridge, Cupar, Fife.

A Parliamentary Patron of Motability, Sir Menzies Campbell commented: "Motability does excellent work in assisting disabled people with their mobility needs, providing them with independence and the greater choice they deserve. It is a pleasure to be associated with the Scheme and to present Norrie with his new car."

Norrie is 59 and lives in Cellardyke. He has Motor Neurone Disease, a condition affecting the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, which can cause progressive paralysis and leave people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves. By using his government-funded mobility allowance, Norrie has chosen a Ford Focus Ghia Estate, his third car through the Motability Scheme.

"My wife, Margaret, does the driving these days," explained Norrie, "as I can no longer use my arms and hands and can't walk very far. Having a Motability car means we don't have to worry about things like road tax, insurance, maintenance or breakdown cover, all those arrangements are taken off our shoulders - it makes a huge difference."

"I used to be very active, working as a PE teacher and loved playing football and golf in my spare time. Now I content myself with watching sport on TV and with all the satellite channels there's certainly a good selection. And I've taken up a new interest - exploring the internet. My computer has been loaded with a special programme which can be controlled with foot pedals - it's taken quite a bit of practise but it's worth it."

"Margaret retired early to look after me and when she can tear me away from watching sport, we enjoy going out doing everyday things together in our Motability car. We can drive over to Edinburgh to visit our daughter but it's easier for our son to visit us as he lives all the way down in Wiltshire."

Don Brereton CB, Director of Motability, added: "For a disabled person a car is often their lifeline, giving them the freedom to come and go as they please, getting to work, to the shops, visiting friends and family - everyday things that the majority of us take for granted. We are delighted that Sir Menzies Campbell has been able to join us at this event to celebrate the success of the Scheme."
