Unique car accessibility guidance

A new online Ricability guide provides individual factsheets with key measurements of over 170 new car models. People can use it to identify how easy, or difficult a particular car is to get in and out of and how much space there is to fit a wheelchair in the boot. Factsheets have been produced with Motability who funded this first stage of an ongoing joint project. The car measurements are now included in the monthly Motability Price Guides.

Each factsheet includes photos of the car plus key dimensions including:

  • Height of the seat from the ground
  • Entry space - door width and distance between the seat and the door
  • Door height - measured from the top of the door to ground level
  • Door opening angle - takes into account any protrusions such as door pockets that may limit space or access
  • Carrying a wheelchair - considers whether a car can comfortably carry a folded and unfolded wheelchair in the boot, both with and without the rear passenger seats folded down.

Explaining the research, David Yelding, Director of Ricability says;

"This is a very exciting and unique project. Disabled and older people have told us for many years how difficult it is to find practical information to help them choose a car that suits their needs. This project is part of our continued commitment to providing independent information to disabled and older consumers."

Ricability is an independent research charity which publishes practical and unbiased guides for older and disabled consumers. To see the car measurement factsheets and other guides see www.ricability.org.uk

Motability is the UK's leading car scheme for disabled people. It provides affordable, convenient, trouble-free motoring to almost 412,000 disabled customers and their families. Powered wheelchairs and scooters can also be financed using the Motability Scheme. For more information on the Motability Scheme please call 0800 093 1000or see www.motability.co.uk

Buying a digital TV for the kitchen or bedroom?

Confused by the choice and jargon? Make sure you know what you are getting by visiting the independent Digital TV Consumer Test Reports free website at www.ricability-digitaltv.org.uk. to see the latest reports on smaller 20" iDTV's.

Ricability, an independent national research charity, is testing a range of digital TV kit to help consumers choose the right equipment for the switch to digital television. Commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) the research is detailed and unbiased and the website free. Reports are now available on over 80 digital TV products, with a further 30 to be added in the next couple of months. This includes digital televisions, indoor aerials, set top boxes and digital TV recorders (PVRs).

The website can help you find digital TV kit that's easy to use, avoid shopping disasters and also save you money; the charity's research found that one of the best indoor TV aerials is also one of the cheapest, at a tenner.

Lindsey Etchell, Principal Researcher for Ricability says,

"20" iDTV's are now coming on to the market and can be ideal for the kitchen or bedroom. We can recommend the JVC LT-20DA7SK (£549) and Sony KDL-20S2030 (£549). Both were fairly easy to use and can offer a stylish, and space saving alternative to going digital with a set top box and an old style CRT TV. "
