Lloyds Banking Group presents Paralympian with Motability car
Ann Wild, one of the most successful wheelchair basketball players in the country, was presented with the key to her new Motability Scheme car by Sir Victor Blank, Chairman, Lloyds Banking Group, on Wednesday 4 March 2009. The presentation took place at Lloyds Banking Group Head Office, 25 Gresham Street, London. Motability is now entering its fourth decade of assisting disabled people with their mobility needs through its car and wheelchair schemes. It is a partnership between the charitable sector, Government, leading banks and the motor and insurance industries. Sir Victor Blank, Chairman, Lloyds Banking Group, said: "I am delighted to be presenting Ann with the key to her new car. Motability plays a vital role in helping disabled people in the UK maintain their independence and Lloyds Banking Group is proud to be involved in the partnership that makes this possible." Lord Sterling GCVO CBE, Chairman and co-founder of Motability with the late Lord Goodman, added: "We are delighted that Sir Victor Blank is presenting Ann with the key to her new Scheme car. Motability's contribution to national life would not have been possible without the enduring support of our partners, such as Lloyds Banking Group. Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland were two of the key founder banks for Motability when it was set up in 1977 and since then over two million vehicles have been provided, allowing people like Ann to enjoy life to the full." Ann Wild, 35, lives in Ilford, in Greater London. She was born with spina bifida, a condition that has affected the development of her back bone, spinal cord and surrounding nerves. She has been playing wheelchair basketball since the age of ten and has competed in the Seoul, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Paralympic Games and captained the Great Britain Women?s Wheelchair Basketball team. Ann graduated from Brunel University in West London, with a degree in Occupational Therapy and went on to work at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel for a number of years. She took a break from work to concentrate on training for the Beijing Paralympics Games and now has her sights set on the London 2012 Paralympics. The car Ann has chosen to lease through the Motability Scheme is a Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 automatic, supplied by Dagenham Motors Wood Green. It has been specially fitted with hand controls to operate the accelerator and brakes as she is unable to use foot pedals. "Having a Motability car allows me to have total freedom without fear or worries," explained Ann. "Knowing I've got transport right outside my door is very reassuring and I feel safe wherever I go with the support that comes with the car - breakdown cover, maintenance and insurance. I travel all over the country on a regular basis for club training and events so having a reliable car and that support is very important to me." www.motability.co.uk
