RAC raise funds for national charity Motability

Earlier this year 15 RAC employees scaled three of the highest peaks in Great Britain to raise over £13,000 for national disability charity, Motability.

To give the team a chance to see what difference a Motability car can make, and thank them for their efforts, Motability customer David Bulwer-Long was presented with the keys to his brand new Motability car at the RAC Service Centre, Norwich.

David, 59, from Norwich, was born with Achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism. This is an inherited genetic condition characterised by abnormal bone growth that results in short stature with disproportionately short arms and legs.

Over the years he has undergone a series of operations on his spine and legs and four years ago became a fulltime wheelchair user. David is one of Motability's original customers, having enjoyed independent motoring for nearly 30 years now.

He has a specially adapted drive from wheelchair Renault Kangoo with automatic ramps and specialised hand controls. The driver's seat is removable so that David can drive, or be driven when he needs to attend hospital appointments.

Rebecca Morrison a representative of the RAC 3 Peaks team said: "Everyone that took part feels a great sense of achievement for completing this tough physical challenge and raising funds for Motability. We're delighted to have the opportunity to meet David and present him with the keys to his new car."

The 3 Peaks Challenge involves climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales. After climbing approximately 3,000 vertical metres and driving 480 miles in the space of 24 hours, the team raised over £6,000. RAC agreed to match the groups' fundraising efforts bringing the total raised to a massive £13,262.

Motability's Fundraising and Marketing Director, Hazel Gotfraind explains: "Some of our customers need extra financial help to get a vehicle adapted to suit their individual needs. With the help and generosity of companies like RAC and their employees, Motability can help customers like David remain independently mobile."
