No barrier to adventure - if Sherwood wins your support!
Plans to protect the world's most famous forest will create a world-class visitor attraction with unrivalled freedom for people with disabilities - if it wins a public vote. Sherwood: The Living Legend is one of just four shortlisted projects in the BIG Lottery Fund's People's £50m contest - to be televised in December. The project will protect ecologically irreplaceable sections of the forest, restore the greenwood and replace old and tired visitor facilities. It will also provide unrivalled disabled access to 250km of paths through some of England's most beautiful country - 90 per cent traffic-free. Sherwood's already popular with disabled visitors who account for 14 per cent of people using the current facilities. It's hoped numbers will rocket if the scheme wins the all-important vote. Success will transform Sherwood into a landscape-scale attraction with futuristic visitor and education facilities. The network will enable all visitors to access all the Sherwood landscape has to offer - from leisurely exploration to all-out adrenaline-pumping adventure. The entire network of paths, including 95km of new surfaced routes, will be free of barriers to disabled access. Its designer Andy Jee, who has personal experience of disability after a spinal injury left him unable to work for five years, believe that's unique in a scheme as comprehensive as this. ![]() He says: "Disabled visitors can come for a week, tackle a range of circular routes and discover new parts of the countryside every day without ever being made to turn back." Sherwood's nearer than you think! A massive 45 per cent of the English population live within 150km (93 miles) of the forest - so this is a healthy and safe destination within easy reach of millions!. At its heart, an iconic tree-shaped visitor centre will offer state-of-the-art interactive displays designed to appeal to people with sensory and learning disabilities; carefully designed seating and full disabled access.
