Radio first for Felix
Retired head teacher Felix Gweru from Havant has become one of the first people in the country to listen to his favourite radio stations on a revolutionary new radio set for blind people. Mr Gweru, who lost his sight in 2006, has received the new Roberts DAB/FM radio and CD player, known as the Concerto, from registered charity the British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF). The set has been designed and built for ease of use by blind and partially sighted people, and includes a Bookmark function that allows anyone listening to a CD to stop it and return later to exactly the same point in the story. "I am absolutely thrilled to have a radio set that meets my needs," said Mr Gweru. "It's so easy to use and has made a huge difference to my life. I like it so much it has pride of place in my living room!" Zimbabwe-born Mr Gweru, who suffers from the eye condition glaucoma, uses the Concerto to listen to his favourite radio stations, or to listen to audio books for the blind. Margaret Grainger, BWBF Chief Executive, said: "For many blind people the radio is a constant companion and is a vital link to the outside world. We wish Mr Gweru many hours of listening pleasure." The BWBF has supplied more than a million specially adapted and designed audio sets for blind and partially sighted people on free permanent loan since the charity was launched by Winston Church in 1929. Concerto was designed and produced by Roberts Radio working to a brief from the BWBF. In addition to CD Bookmark, DAB/ FM Radio and SD Card capabilities Concerto features 10 one touch station presets; an easy to read LCD display with zoom function and hi-visibility yellow controls. To find out more, or to support the work of the British Wireless for the Blind Fund, visit: www.blind.org.uk or call 01622 754757. Concerto can also be bought through the BWBF's trading arm at £195.
