Land ahoy - South West young people have a splash on innovative boat for disabled
Young people from the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust were treated to a very special sea voyage last week on a boat specifically designed for wheelchair users. The three days of sailing were organised by the Horizons Trust, who invited young people from Dame Hannah's to try out the vessel, which was launched in the summer. The young people were treated to a voyage around Plymouth Sound in the modified motor boat named 'Friendship'. Based in Ivybridge, Dame Hannah's provides education, therapy and care for children and young people with profound disabilities and associated learning difficulties. Plymouth based children's sailing charity, the Horizons Trust, recently won £60,000 from the 'People's Millions' lottery to buy the motor boat. Securing matched funding for the Lottery grant allowed them to customize it. The Horizons Trust regularly takes disadvantaged and disabled children from Plymouth out on their vessels to enjoy water-based activities. The Mitchell 31ft fishing boat was specifically designed to enable wheelchair users full access. The vessel's modifications include; a large, flat deck, a sliding patio door which gives access to the helm and a hydraulic lifting platform that gives a fantastic panoramic view from the Captain's seat. In addition, there are three types of steering controls as well as auto pilot, so the children are able to have a full sea going experience. Shardi Khosravi, a physiotherapist at Dame Hannah's, said, "We want to thank the Horizons Trust for giving young people at Dame Hannah's a fantastic boat trip out on Plymouth Sound. They thoroughly enjoyed their sea voyage and the feeling of the sea spray in their hair!"
