Accessibility

The most important factor to consider when choosing your accommodation is accessibility. Inaccessible accommodation could ruin your holiday.

The wheelchair symbol is still the most widely used and recognised symbol to identify accessibility. However, on your holiday, if you want a further indication of the accessibility of a building or attraction, look for the National Accessible Standard. And, always inform the accommodation provider of your needs.

What is the National Accessible Standard?

The National Accessible Standard is a set of standards administered by Holiday Care, under the Tourism for All campaign, and the National Tourist Boards of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the British Hotels, Restaurants and Catering Association.

The National Accessible Standard identifies the level of accessibility. The following types of accommodation are currently inspected: hotels, guesthouses, self-catering, caravan parks and attractions.

The National Accessible Standard is in three categories:

Category One: Accommodation is likely to meet the needs of all wheelchair users, including those travelling independently

Category Two: Accommodation is likely to meet the needs of wheelchair users accompanied by a capable helper

Category Three: Accommodation is likely to meet the needs of those who can walk short distances and climb at least three steps. May not be suitable for wheelchair users

Wherever you see these symbols, you will know the accommodation has been inspected by trained professionals to a set of specific criteria to guarantee the accessibility to the level listed.
