Motor insurance

If you are taking your vehicle with you on your holiday, make sure you have an adequate motor insurance policy. Read more about this in the Motoring channel and the Money channel.

If travelling abroad, all UK motor insurance policies provide the minimum cover (your liability to third parties) required by law in EU countries (and certain others).

This minimum policy does not cover theft, fire or damage to your car, and may not completely cover your liability to other people. Therefore, you should take out a comprehensive insurance policy before you go abroad. This will usually involve the payment of an additional premium.

However, even an extended policy will not cover breakdowns. These policies can be bought with your holiday insurance or separately.

Travelling abroad

The Green Card is an international motor insurance card. It is evidence that you have the minimum insurance cover, and is readily recognised by police in countries who are members of the Green Card system.

The Green Card is not an insurance cover in itself. If you do not take a Green Card when travelling in the EU, it is a good idea to take your Certificate of Insurance. Ask your insurer for details.
