Passports and visas

If you are travelling abroad you will need a valid passport and any necessary visas.

Passports

Before leaving for your overseas holiday, you may need to apply for a passport or renew your existing passport.

You may need special assistance when applying for, or renewing, your passport. It is a good idea to contact the UK Passport Agency in advance and make an appointment.

If you use a wheelchair, all UK Passport Agency offices are accessible. Not all of the offices have accessible toilets, but staff will ensure you have access to an appropriate toilet in the building.

If you have a hearing impairment, you will find a staff member in each office who is trained in sign language and will be able to help you complete your application form, as well as answer any questions you may have. The service counters also have induction loops. Or you may be able to talk to a staff member in a quiet room.

To contact the UK Passport Agency, tel: 0870 521 0410, for the national call centre tel: 0870 240 8090, website: www.ukpa.gov.uk. The Agency is also registered with Typetalk, the RNID and BT.

If you have a visual impairment, audio tapes are available to help you complete your application form. Forms and other printed information are available in large print. All information (apart from application forms) is available in Braille. You can also request a Braille identifying sticker for your passport.

Travelling with your passport

  • always keep your passport in a safe place

  • make a copy of your passport and leave it at home
Visas

Some countries require you to have a visa to be able to enter. To find out whether you need a visa, contact the Consulate or Embassy of the country you are planning to visit. Or, if you are bookng your holiday though a travel agent, check with your agent.
