Travelling by plane
Planning your flight If you are planning to fly to your holiday destination, it is important to keep a few things in mind.- make sure you have any necessary medical clearance. If you have a stable or permanent condition you will not usually require medical clearance, but check with the airline. You may need to complete a medical information form (MEDIF) or an Incapacitated Passengers Handling Advice (INCAD) form
- if you are a frequent traveller, it is a good idea to get a Frequent Travellers Medical Card (FREMEC). The FREMEC is available to travellers with a permanent disability who are deemed to be in a stable medical condition. You can get an application form through your travel agent
- if you have a guide dog, you must obtain the correct veterinary certification and your dog may be subject to quarantine regulations (where applicable). Airlines usually transport guide dogs free of charge
What to ask when booking When booking your flight (if going through a travel agent, make sure that they check these provisions on your behalf):
- notify the airline reservations department of your special needs and what
kind of facilities or assistance you will need at the departure airport, at
your destination and any intermediate stops, and in the aircraft. For example,
if you will need assistance getting to the check-in desk; if you wish to remain
in your own wheelchair rather than transfer to an airline wheelchair at check-in;
if you have a guide dog; or if you need to take a respirator or oxygen on
board
- it is also a good idea to check with the airports themselves on their provisions
for special needs customers
- check whether the airline will allow you to fly alone or whether you will
require a companion
- be sure to check whether the cost of any special assistance is included
in the price of your ticket
- notify the airline if you have any special medical or dietary needs
Always confirm your flight, and also confirm that the airline has made provisions
for your needs.
