Driving tests

The theory test

You must take a theory test before you are able to take the practical test. If you don't pass a practical test within two years of taking the theory test, you will need to take the practical again

The test is in the form of a multiple choice paper. The car and motorcycle test has 35 questions covering 12 topics and can usually be completed in 40 minutes. In order to pass, you have to get at least 30 of these right

If you feel that you will need assistance to complete the test, give advance notification so that any any necessary arrangements can be made

If you are physically unable to mark the boxes on the theory test paper without assistance, a member of staff may work through the paper with you

If you are dyslexic or have reading difficulties you will be allowed extra time to complete the test. In some cases you may have a member of staff read the questions out to you

If you are deaf, a test using British Sign Language or a lip speaker can be arranged.

The Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) (www.dtlr.gov.uk) advises that their centres should have wheelchair access "wherever possible", but unfortunately this is not always the case. Should there be no wheelchair access, DriveSafeServices Ltd will either arrange for the test to be conducted at your home or will arrange for the test to be taken at another test centre.

The practical test

The standard of the test is exactly the same for everyone, but it is accepted that driver's with disabilities may have special needs. Extra time is therefore allocated so you will not feel harassed in any way.

Driving examiners are specially trained to understand particular problems which may arise from disabilities.

You will be given priority in booking test appointments and have priority on cancellations. Due to the slightly longer nature of the driving test for most disabled people, however, a sequence of two consecutive cancellations has to be available at any one time, which is not exactly common.

Waiting times for practical driving tests can be very long, so apply in plenty of time.

Before the examiner begins the driving section of the test, you will be asked to read a number plate at a prescribed distance. You should wear your spectacles or contact lenses if you need them, and continue to wear them for driving. Failure to meet the requirements of the eyesight test will mean that you will fail the test, and the examiner will therefore terminate the test at that stage.

In order to pass the test you will need to be able to:

  • start the engine of the vehicle
  • move away straight ahead or at an angle
  • overtake, meet or cross the path of other vehicles and take an appropriate course
  • turn right-hand and left-hand corners correctly
  • stop the vehicle in an emergency and normally, and in the latter case bring it to rest at an appropriate part of the road
  • drive the vehicle backwards and whilst doing so enter a limited opening either to the right or to the left (does not apply to invalid carriages-trikes)
  • cause the vehicle to face in the opposite direction by the use of forward and reverse gears (does not apply to trikes)
  • indicate your intended actions at appropriate times by giving appropriate signals in a clear and unmistakable manner
  • act correctly and promptly on all signals given by traffic signs and traffic controllers and take appropriate action on signs given by other road users

If you pass your test, this will normally be in respect to the class of vehicle on which you were tested and any additional kinds of vehicle covered by that category.

The examiner may conclude that you should be passed only in relation to vehicles of a particular construction or design, even if the test was not conducted in a vehicle of that construction and design.
