Benefits and Appeals
![]() Jim Joint moderator, Benefits and Appeals I'm in my mid 60's and live in the south Lake District. I've had MS for over 20 years. I also have chronic asthma and polyarthritis so need to use a wheelchair. Originally, I was an engineer after serving a 5 years apprenticeship. However, following a severe car accident when I was in my late 20's, I undertook a mature students degree and after competing the course I started working in local government in housing. After about 3 years I moved into working in welfare rights, and for 9 years I was Principal Welfare Rights Officer for a large N.W. metropolitan borough council. I had to take early retirement from that post for health reasons in 1990. Thankfully, I was able to do so part time work on a freelance basis. In 1994, I was appointed by the Lord Chancellor to sit as a Disability Specialist on DLA Tribunals and continued to do this work until late 2004. Therefore i have a good knowledge of benefits from both sides of the fence, so as to speak. Married to Pat for 40 years, come May 2008, we had 2 sons. Sadly our youngest son, Clive, aged 27 was killed in a tragic drowning accident in France several years ago. I still manage to drive an automatic car, and my hobbies include digital photography, especially of views in the Lake District, Apple Mac computers, eating out and listening to music of all genres.
