Untitled Document
Choosing pressure relief equipment Pressure sores should not be seen as the inevitable result of becoming old or disabled. Many sores could, and should, be prevented. Not only are they potentially life threatening, they are painful, difficult to heal and can result in having to spend several months in hospital. Lack of knowledge about the cause, poor advice, provision of inadequate equipment, and delay in providing the appropriate care are all causes that should be rectified. Methods of early prediction to identify those at risk, and an emphasis on early intervention, should be encouraged. It should be remembered that equipment to relieve pressure sores, should be provided right across the range of daily living activities, i.e. it is not sufficient only to provide a pressure mattress, protection and awareness of how to avoid pressure sores is also needed in a wheelchair or chair, in the bath and on the commode.
