Choosing a shower and accessories

Parents may choose to use a shower to wash a child, especially if the child is older. Getting a child in and out of the bath may become hard work or hazardous. Showering may also make it possible for the child to wash independently.

Families with other young children may, however, not be prepared to consider having the bath removed and a shower room constructed, as the rest of the family will no longer have the opportunity of having a play/soak in the bath.

It may be possible to build an additional bathroom, perhaps on the ground floor either because of space restrictions upstairs or to provide level access to the bathroom for a child who uses a wheelchair. A paddling pool for siblings to play and bath in can be used in a shower room, if a shower offers the easiest way to manage the personal hygiene of the older child with a disability.

Provision of children's showering equipment

Provision may include:

  • shower trays

  • shower seats

  • shower trolleys

  • mobile shower chairs

Before making any decisions about buying equipment therefore, it is advisable to contact a paediatric occupational therapist (OT) who will come and assess the child's daily living needs. The OT will advise on possible solutions and may be able to provide some items of equipment on loan.

If you decide to buy equipment and gadgets privately, it is best to try them out first. Arrange a visit to a Disabled Living Centre (DLC) (www.dlcc.co.uk). DLCs have a range of children's equipment on display and you can receive information on what may be most suitable for you and your child.
