Class 3 wheelchairs
To use Class 3 wheelchairs, you do not have to be registered as disabled. The law requires Class 3 wheelchairs to be fitted with lights, indicators, horn, rearview mirror, and rear reflectors. Optional features include a flashing beacon. This can be used when driving on the road to warn other road users. You should obey the Highway Code at all times. This includes complying with relevant eyesight requirements and not driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs etc. Class 3 wheelchairs are not allowed on motorways, bicycle tracks or bus/cycle lanes. Although legally allowed on dual carriageways, this is not recommended. It is advisable to do a training course - especially if you are not used to driving on roads. Details of these can be obtained from a local road safety officer or from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)(www.rospa.co.uk) which runs a proficiency scheme.
