Choosing a standard self-propelled wheelchair A large number of different types of wheelchair are available on the market. There are three different types of wheelchair: self-propelled wheelchairs; attendant-propelled wheelchairs; and electric wheelchairs. This section deals with self-propelled wheelchairs. As their name implies, these are propelled by the user and are primarily for daily living, although they are sometimes used for sport. In general, these chairs are light, easily transportable and easy to maintain. If a self-propelled wheelchair doesn't meet all your needs, you may need to consider an attendant-propelled, electric or high performance. For example, you may prefer to have an electric wheelchair for outdoor use. Always consider carefully before choosing a specific model, and ensure that you try the wheelchair around the house and over local routes so that any problems can be sorted. Before deciding on a particular type of chair, it is a good idea to visit a Disabled Living Centre (DLC) (www.dlcc.co.uk). Disabled Living Centre's provide information on equipment and allow you to try out equipment.
