Choosing a career

Whether you're looking for a job, or wanting to change jobs, it is important to look for work in an area that best suits your skills, abilities and interests.

Your skills and objectives

A good start when considering a career is to establish where you are at the moment in terms of job-related skills, experience, academic background, personal skills, interests and abilities.

You might want to talk to someone who knows you well such as a friend or member of your family, and ask them what they think your strengths are.

Another option is to make use of Jobcentre Plus (www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk).

The ES offers career advice and can carry out personality and psychometric tests for you. A personality test asks questions about what you like to do while a psychometric test establishes your abilities and skills. However, these tests are not suited to some disabilities, so check with your ES.

Once you have established your strengths and interests you should turn them into an ideal job specification. You should focus on skills that are transferable: skills that can be used in many employment situations. These skills combined with any experience you have will determine what types of employment you may be suitable for.

Having established your ideal job or type of work, you should now formulate your skills in a CV, fill out application forms and prepare yourself for interviews.
