Volunteering
Volunteering gives you the chance to learn new skills and gain relevant work experience by providing valuable assistance to the community or chosen project. Voluntary work ranges from offering your time for a few hours a week to full-time placements. Opportunities range from administrative, advisory or campaign work with local disability organisations to support work on a group holiday; from assistance with a residential placement to classroom support at a local school - it all depends on what is available locally and what you are able to offer. Voluntary work is unpaid but some organisations may be able to offer out-of-pocket expenses (such as travel expenses), while others may offer accommodation for a period, plus expenses and a small allowance. If you are claiming means-tested benefits, the repayment of out-of-pocket expenses will not affect your eligibility, but if you receive payment over and above your expenses you might lose your entitlement to certain benefits such as Income Support.
