Start on the right foot

Congratulations; you've landed the job you wanted... but beware - if you're not careful things can turn sour before you've got your feet under the table. Here are a few handy hints to keep away the snipers.

Prepare yourself

Learn as much as you can about the place before the first day by reading past newsletters or any company literature available, talking to former employees and using connections to learn the unwritten rules. Coming in clued up will show your superiors that you are smart, thorough and committed to the job.

Dress to impress

It's safer to err towards neutral and professional in your appearance. Turning up in combats during your settling-in period implies you don't care what your new colleagues think, you're going to be laid back whatever. Dressing casually also implies that you see the work environment and duties as relaxed, when they probably believe them to be demanding and stressful.

Listen and suss

Don't get drawn into allegiances too quickly or you may find you've alienated valuable contacts in the work place. Take your time to work out who matters, how people operate and what the relationship dynamics are. By the same token, play your own cards close to your chest. Don't divulge too much information too quickly, or you could end up being pigeonholed to your disadvantage.

Learn the modus operandi

This is crucial for communicating within the company and for determining its cultural and political landscape. For example, people may communicate short messages by email or by speaking directly to the person: either method could be considered good or bad form. Try to interact with everyone, especially important decision-makers. Ascertain the ways they operate: do they like details or the big picture? Obtaining this information early will save time and stress later on.
