The work of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee contributes to maintaining and enriching biological diversity, conserving geological features and sustaining natural systems – and delivers the UK and international nature conservation responsibilities of the 4 UK country conservation bodies. Responsibilities include advising Ministers and devolved administrations on the development and implementation of policies for UK wide and international nature conservation issues. It also aims to establish common standards throughout the UK for research, monitoring and analysis with regards to nature conservation – and to commission relevant research. The Committee is now seeking to appoint an Independent Member with a proven track record in the field of sustainable development. Your remit will be to provide additional scientific expertise and support to the ongoing work of the Committee and identify strategic issues – as well as introduce matters and thinking that are outside the normal experience of the country conservation bodies. Remuneration is currently set at £9,455 on the basis of 2.5 days per month (plus reasonable travel expenses). For further information and an application pack, please contact publicappts@defra.gsi.gov.uk or telephone 020 7270 6166 quoting reference PAPPT49. Closing date: 12 noon 12 May 2008.
