Influence policy at an international level Up to six new members for the Darwin Advisory Committee Funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Darwin Initiative aims to draw on the wealth of biodiversity expertise in the UK to work with local partners in developing countries to protect and enhance their biodiversity. We are now seeking up to six new members to join the Darwin Advisory Committee which advises the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the principles and aims of the Darwin Initiative grant programme and on the selection of projects for funding. You must be able to bring either scientific expertise or equivalent professional experience in a field related to biodiversity, conservation or the environment. In addition, you will have experience of working with or within countries in which the Darwin Initiative operates; familiarity with conservation work in Overseas Territories will be desirable. Your personal qualities will include excellent communication and analytical skills, together with the ability to work constructively with others and participate in collective decision making. You will also have proven expertise in providing impartial and pragmatic advice and identifying priorities for funding. As a committee member, you will be required to attend four to six meetings per year in addition to Darwin Initiative events and you will spend additional time on preparation for meetings. You must also be willing to travel to meetings within the UK. The appointment is initially for three years and will commence in Autumn 2009. Members do not receive any payment but are reimbursed for travel and subsistence expenses incurred.
