I've been born with a genetic condition, incredibly rare and it has side affects which mean I am hugely overweight and my muscles are slowly deteriorating. I have been working all my adult life, but in the last 6 months have reduced hours due to my disability to part time, also have had to start using a wheelchair, initially with my incredibly strong husband pushing me around, however this wasn't the most successful experiment in increasing my mobility (not just because we ran over the dog!!!), so we enquired about an electric chair; this weighs 9 stone and I wouldn't be able to use it without my husband, so very naively (sp) I visited my GP and asked for referral for assessment for suitability for an electric wheelchair and motor vehicle to increase my mobility as I'm increasingly becoming a work to home person as I can't get out and about independantly. My GP is fine and said he'd get it sorted asap for me.

I have always assumed that as I become more ill and therefore more disabled that the benefits system would kick in, but now I read all these posts on "the system" and peoples struggles with it and i realise that the likelihood of us getting any help until I'm actually bed bound is nil.

Why do they take the attitude that disabled people want to stay at home with no social life and no interaction with "normal" or able bodied people. I'm finding this whole experience very patronizing, don't they realise that "they" are taking away our independance. Speaking as someone who currently is independant of the system. HOW DARE THEY. I think reading many of your posts that we need to do something, they're just pushing people around, god help the assessor who mentions diet and lifestyle to me, I'm used to a certain amount of ignorance but wont tolerate pig ignorance, there comes a point in everyones life when you have to stop trying to educate the ignorant and stand up and be counted! RANT:mad:

Went to my Tribunal last Thursday (16th May).

The DLA provided taxis to and from the Hearing.

You've all been wonderful, supportive, caring and basically NICE. THANK YOU.

Well today (Saturday) received my letter. Four pages, read it, read it again. Oh and a final read before I actually took in what they said....

Higher Rate Mobility - backdated to September 2012
Care Allowance - Lower Rate - backdated to September 2012

It was a long battle to get the Hearing and Appealing etc, but finally for me it feels like I won the Lottery.

Many many thanks to you all for the support and very kind words

A hearty Hello everyone!

One of my friends has recently been awarded IRESA SG and gets DLA HRM&MRC. She has quadraplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy. She has been sent a letter for an interview with a compliance officer at JCM. Seriously I don't think she has been reported for running marathons, fixing roofs, teaching Salsa or training for next Olympics. Maybe this is just a random check to ensure correct level of benefits?
She is about 3 weeks ahead of me in the ESA process and yesterday called JCM and Was snapped at and not given any answers. I'm worried I will be invited to attend the Lion's den also!

Yikes! :(

Any experiences or advice on Lion taming welcome...

Thanks friends from BB

Been disabled for many years but have adapted my work and lifestyle around my illness and just kept slogging away, however am rapidly going downhill and my priorities are changing. My husband has suggested that we buy an electric wheelchair or scooter so that we can go for a walk along one of our more local promenades so at least we can get out and about. But I think, come on Boo there has to be more out there. So what do you do with your leisure time?
