Why are benefits so hard to claim now?

Does anyone remember when benefits were very easy to get?

My mum said 10-20 years ago benefits were much easier to get than they are now...

She said you could get benefits and be left alone in peace

Now you have to jump through hoops to get even basic benefits like JSA/ESA

You should vote labour next election - more benefits for us if you do.

I don't necessarily agree with you that benefits are harder to claim now than 10-20 yrs ago. I've known a lot of people who struggled to make successful DLA claims.

I think it is a bit of a myth that everyone could just fill in a form and get money.

Not too sure what your question is. Or even if there is a question. Maybe just nostalgia

Benefits easier to get 10-20 years ago, not from what I remember.

    The names have changed but-

I was out of work in 1999 and claiming 'Unemployment Benefit'.

As well as signing on weekly, after the first month I had to attend 'Job Club' for three hours every weekday morning.
    Similar to the Work Programme.
In a different building, but I believe it was run by the jobcentres themselves rather than an outside provider.

And your benefit could be stopped if you did not attend.
Wasn't called a Sanction in those days, they just stopped your claim altogether.

So not much has changed there, except the names and perhaps our memories.
I'm intelligent enough to know that I don't know everything.
But I'm good at searching for, and finding, stuff.

I was one of Maggie's 3 million unemployed in the 80's....easy??? don't make me laugh! Remember the Poll Tax Riots? I lived in the north east for a number of years and saw first hand the hardship of the decline in industry - coal, steel. Privatisation of national industries.
