    Registered Disabled?

Over time I have seen lots of references to people being 'registered' as disabled or on the 'Disabled Register'. Now I've never really thought about it but seeing it again prompts me to ask what does it mean, what register?.
I believe that in the old days of the little blue invalid cars there may have been somthing but I'm disabled, receive DLA, Nil car Tax, Blue Badge, correct benefits (I think) NHS Wheelchair + appliances but as far as I know I'm not on any register..
    Is there one?

I'm registered with my County Council (Hanpshire) through social services, I first got it a few years back when I joined a fishing club and they wanted proof of disability and later my supermarket had a checkout for disabled people and I got fed up with people saying “look he's not disabled” the card came in very handy.
All that is on the card (front) name and reference No and date and lasts 5 years and on the back there is 9 options of your disability and it is free.
    Hope this helps.

This is from my council, your should be the same

A few local authorities still operate a registration system, but most don't these days.

Once the DDA came in (in 1995) the registration system was dropped by most local authorities.

People who were registered as disabled - Green Card holders

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) replaced the quota scheme, the designated employment scheme, and registration as a disabled person under the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act 1944.

Now you don't register as disabled in order to get rights under the DDA or Equality Act 2010; you just look at whether you meet the DDA/Equality Act definition of 'disability'.

The introduction of the employment quota scheme with the 'Disabled Persons Employment Act 1944 secured employment rights of disabled people. However, successive governments failure to enforce the scheme and the obvious preference for voluntary policies of persuasion have not only failed to provide disabled people with jobs, but have also emphasised the traditional divisions between them and non-disabled people. The quota scheme specifies that all employers employing more than 20 workers just employ three per cent of their workforce from the disabled person's employment register. The maximum fine for employer's who break the law was set in 1944 at £100 - it has never been updated! Although the overwhelming majority of employers ignore the quota scheme there have only ever been nine prosecutions and the last one was in 1975.

Strange thing is that Leeds City Council do not register you as such either anymore & have not for years, however, it is surprising how many official people with LCC ask if I am registered disabled.

If you ever park in Sainsbury's read their disabled parking notices - they all state that you can only park if you are registered disabled!

I was in Tesco Extra the other day. No accessible parking bays frdee. Two couples were getting out of their cars - no blue badges. In fact a third of the spaces were taken up by non-disabled. I told the security guard at the Tesco entrance - he agreed that people abuse the system but they can't enforce the policy as it wasn't their car park!!

Well look there's a pink pig flying overhead.

A Tesco spokesman told me: “Tesco is very committed to making sure disabled people can park in the disabled bays and we do issue penalty charges at some stores. Our new store design is such that the ATM machines are well away from the disabled parking as we found this was one of the main reasons for abuse.”
I could have told them that!

Do they just mean if you have a BB?
