My GP's computer system is running Windows 10 and was hit by the attack earlier in the month. As of yesterday a contractor has attended the surgery and managed to restore access to all patient records, but has yet to restore the system back to an acceptable speed.

I had to laugh when I first saw that theory yesterday.

The Chinese and the English were written correctly, so it must be the Chinese who did it.
(Because no English speaker would know Chinese, right? Despite there being millions of Chinese Americans and Chinese English.)

Of course international criminals will try to disguise where they are from, so they are more likely to use their own language wrongly, and a foreign language correctly, to try and put investigators off.

Well before the internet kidnappers would deliberately spell ransom notes wrongly, use regional expressions, etc. to get the police looking in the wrong place.

I'm intelligent enough to know that I don't know everything.
But I'm good at searching for, and finding, stuff.

Obviously, that's why you are where you are and he "cyber-security expert Prof Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey", is where he is.

If you are still running XP, Vista, or Win 8 (not 8.1), then you should be aware that Microsoft have this week issued another 'emergency' security patch for these older systems that are out of mainstream support.

    https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/13/1...ates-june-2017

This is to protect against another 3 exploit tools that were stolen from the NSA and released by the Shadowbrokers.
    (EXPLODINGCAN, ENGLISHMANDENTIST and ESTEEMAUDIT).

If you are still running XP, Vista, or Windows 8, then you should make sure your Automatic Updates are turned on, or check for and install the update yourself.

    New Ransomware attack

You may already be aware that there is a new ransomware attack spreading through Eastern Europe.
It's got as far as Germany the last I saw.

    It's called BadRabbit.

It disguises itself as an Adobe Flash installer, mainly embeded in news and media websites.
Beware of anything that asks to download or update Flash.

Once again it's using leaked NSA exploits, leaked by the same group as the Wannacry/petya ransomware, but it uses a different exploit known as EternalRomance

Back up you files and photos now. Just in case is better than wishing you had.

More info on the badrabbit ransomware-

    EDIT-
I had a recommendation here about using "Controlled Folder Access" in the Windows 10 Security Centre.
I have removed it. CFA is crudely implemented (piss poor) and can cause more trouble than it's worth.
