Mobility Roadshow to host Mobility Scooter World Record attempt

On the first day of this year’s Mobility Roadshow - Thursday 21st June - Steve Tarrant, the motorsport marshal who famously survived a near-fatal crash at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2000, is attempting to smash the current Guinness World Record™ for ‘the greatest distance covered in 24 hours by a mobility scooter’.

The Mobility Roadshow takes place over three days (21st to 23rd June) at the Peterborough Arena, East of England Showground, where Steve will tackle his world record on the Speedway Ring. He calculates that around 750 laps are required to beat the record of 154 miles achieved by Jackie Weeden on 15th May 2011. He will be using a robust TGA Breeze S4 mobility scooter for his challenge, similar to the one he uses on a daily basis, and will be supported by a TGA pit crew.

Jacqui Jones, executive director of Mobility Choice, the charity behind the event, is delighted to welcome Steve - a long-time Roadshow supporter - to the show. “Steve is such an inspiration, especially to anyone newly disabled and we shall all be cheering him on,” said Jacqui. “The Mobility Roadshow is the perfect occasion for this world record attempt, which visitors will be able to witness during the show open hours. We wish Steve the best of luck.”

Why do it, we ask? “Since surviving my horrific ordeal at Goodwood, I have always had a steely determination and I thrive on a challenge - I am so up for this!” was Steve’s response, hardly containing his eagerness to get going.

Through this challenge, Steve is fundraising for the Royal British Legion, and SK Motorsport, a not-for-profit organisation that helps promote motorsport opportunities for people with disabilities.

Steve Tarrant made a guest appearance at the Mobility Roadshow at Donington Park in June 2002 when he joined drivers of adapted ‘fast cars’ in his Ford Focus liveried in the colours of the late rally driver Colin McCrae.

The original and premier consumer mobility show, celebrating 30 years in 2013, the Mobility Roadshow is a lively interactive event for disabled people of all ages, their families and carers. It offers the opportunity to test drive a wide range of adapted vehicles, and explore adaptations and conversions, motoring accessories, scooters and bikes, products for the home and children, clothing, gadgets and gizmos. Plus charities, information services, and organisations offering advice and products that include insurance, accessible holidays and accommodation, fitness and therapies.
