    Carers allowance and pip

I am a carer for my fiance who suffers with an enduring mental illness (schizophrenia) and also suffers with chronic plantar fasciitis and scoliosis of the lumbar region of the back. and other feet issues. We just had a letter come about incapacity benefit which my partner recieves and has done since 1995, and that its going to change to ESA. We have been told to wait for a phone call and then a quesionairre about her disabilites.

I contacted mind and a man said he will help us fill in the quesionairre. I am also worried about what will happen to my C arers Allowance when they change DLA to PIP, will I still get carers if my fiance gets PIP on the low or high rate pip. So many changes it worrying my fiance so much.

She is not able to work due to the nature of her illness, and even the phyciatrist says she is very vunerable with people and easily lead. Any advice will be greatly recieved. Thanks

The change to ESA is affecting everyone - so I'm afraid all you can do is wait for the form/phone call, and get any help needed from MIND. Your fiancee may not need an ESA medical at all, depending on her DLA Care, and meanwhile her payments should continue.
Under PIP either of the two rates of Care will enable carers to claim CA.
The worst thing about these changes is the waiting. It's easy to say 'don't worry - it could be years yet' because nothing will stop people worrying about it. But the fact is that with the change to PIP it could indeed be years before your fiancee is required to change, because the transition to PIP is expected to take until 2017.

Thanks for all your info, its very good of you to explain things in plain english. My fiance gets high rate DLA care for mobility and care, ans Incapacity Benefit long term. and I am hoping it will just transfer over to the right allowance. Do the Esa people look at my fiance's DLA as well as her Incapacity Benefit, I'm alittle confused by this. Maybe they look at everything she is on. Will a doctors support letter help with this ESA questionairre when it arrives. Also I have read on the net that mind dont always put alot of info on the questionairre form for ESA. I will try and fill it out myself with the help of mind. Thanks alot and hope to hear from you again.

I hate to worry you, but it is only right you are aware, it will not be a simple transfer. There will be questions, interviews, medicals, & lots of waiting. Yes, a letter could help, it will certainly not hurt. One of the things you need to show, in great detail, is why fiance cannot work, you want her to go into the Support Group & not the WAG Group. If you ahve any questions on any aspect of the form you get, then post all here, people will advise. At the end of the day you need to say what she feels is right to say, but people will help.

Thanks for your info; I have filled in my partners esa50 questionairre myself and Mind is coming to look at it on wednesday. I have put in all the symptoms that affect her and how her illnesses affect her daily life in detail. Her GP IS also going to do a supporting letter with detailed info. I have scanned my esa50 and kept copies of all the info i put in it. I am finding out where to send the medical letter that her gp is doing for her. I have been told i have to send any medical evidence to job centre plus, but I am going to still send some evidence to atos even though they said dont send any. Im hoping she wont have to go for a medical assesment, we will have to see

Well I wish you both the best of luck with the application.

If you need more information about ESA/PIP/Carer's Allowance check out this website too.

Having read your posts it looks like you're the right person to fill out the form being a logical plain english writer.

Thankyou for your info, I think I have explained quite alot in my partners ESA50 Questionairre. Things like how vulnerable she can be, and a danger in the kitchen, she cannot use a cooker as she gets easily confused etc. and lots more. I'm hoping that I have put enough in.

I suggest you check if you can get Income Support to top up your Carers Allowance and her ICB. The income Support rate each week is £208.60 less her ICB and your carers allowance. Any income support left is paid to you. DLA is ignored completely by other benefits like ESA.
