    New wheelchairs at Manchester Aiport

Just a warning for anyone flying out from Manchester Airport if you need wheelchair assistance. Some idiot has brought in a job lot of manual wheelchairs which foot plates dont swing out and the arms are not removable, so, if you need to use the toilet, and cant get out, or find it difficult to get out, of the chair you are going to find it very difficult to get near the toilet. Also because the arm cannot be removed you cannot do a side transfer so you have to be lifted over the arm and out of the chair.

Its obvious that the person who authorised, or bought, them hasn't got a clue when it comes to disabled people.

So if you do need assistance check the chair before you get in it as the assistance people said they still have a few of the other left.

That reminds me, last year I flew from T1 at Manchester and had to go through the full body scanner where you have to stand with your arms in the air. It was demeaning to be held up by your arms by another passenger on one side and the security person on the other as I can't stand unaided.
I do not object to these security measures as they are for our own safety but I do object to having to be held up, especially partly by another passenger.

These scanner designs have not been thought out very well, at least there should be some form of drop down rigid hand grips.

I was going to point out the scanner deficits on my return but completely forgot.

I have flown from T1 twice again this year and was not asked to go through the scanner but searched and swabbed instead along with my frame as was used to be normal practice. I wonder if someone has already complained.

Luckily I do not use a chair but take my frame to the plane door but it is always handy to know in advance just in case.

It's best to not post your email address in the full form due to spam problems, it's best to replace the @ sign with (at) as this should stop you getting spam. It's interesting though on the body scanners, maybe they've realised it's not disabled friendly, lucky I won't fly but there should be a reasonable alternative.

    Hi for future ref,

I fly out from Manchester at least once a year with my family, if you notify your holiday company that you are disabled and need wheel chair assistance, they will have one waiting for you with someone to take you right to the cabin door, they sidetrack your entire party through a separate channel at security where they check you whilst still in your chair, then straight on to the plane first. you can then have your chair packed in wrapping at the airport and goes with your luggage in the hold and well protected, at the other end someone will be waiting with a chair to assist you through the airport including getting your luggage, most times they have the ambilift waiting at Alicante which drives you right round to luggage collection. I've always had fantastic service & Manchester esp with Jet2 & Thompson, we get extra leg room nr the front for me & my partner at no extra cost, the rest of our party have to have normal seats further back at least peace from the brats!!
