If you are young, disabled and keen to get behind the wheel, or newly disabled and want to research adapted motoring options, Get Going Live! is just for you. This exciting one-day event will help you start driving and plan for your first car.
Taking place at the TRL site near Wokingham, Berkshire, on Saturday 11th August, Get Going Live! is organised by two national disability charities, Disabled Motoring UK and Mobility Choice, the team behind the Mobility Roadshow, delivering this important service to novice disabled drivers.
Young people with disabilities can gain a driving licence at 16, a year ahead of those who are not disabled. That’s great news, but where do you start? At this free one-day event you can test drive adapted vehicles and get expert advice from organisations and companies with a wealth of experience.
You must be aged 14 to test drive a choice of around 20 adapted vehicles on the TRL road system, accompanied at all times by a professional driver. Younger prospective learners are welcome to practise transferring, familiarise themselves with controls and may also travel as a passenger with an instructor.
Visitors can also try out fully accessible 7m climbing wall with over 20 routes to the top, plus all-ability cycling – so bring the family!.
In the Ask the Driver feature, visitors can talk to Jack Pegram, 20-year-old student and recent Olympic Torchbearer about his own real-time experiences of learning to drive, choosing a vehicle, finding the right adaptations and generally getting on the road. Jack will also have his Olympic Torch with him for visitors see first-hand.
The first two Get Going Live! events of the summer at Donington Park and the YEC Harrogate brought visitors from all over the UK for their first taste of adapted driving. “Absolutely fantastic, invaluable for first time drivers,” said 17-year-old Callum Hodgson. ” Where else can you get a chance to try so many cars. I really enjoyed the Astra, something to aspire to!” 15-year-old Hannah Booth said: “I’ve had a brilliant day! The driving was great – loads of choice and information too.”
And it’s not only younger people that have benefitted from these events: 80-year-old Joan Sidney from North Allerton came to Harrogate to get back behind the wheel after an accident last year. “I can’t wait to be driving again!” said Joan.
