    Exercise classes for blind people?

    Hello,

My dad´s 66 and is registered blind. He lives alone and is getting really fat and gets out of breath easily. When I suggest joining a dance class or something he says it´s really hard to do those things if you´re blind. Does anyone know if there are any keep fit exercise classes especially for blind people? Or any kind of exercise - swimming, running, dancing, yoga in the south east London area?

    Any help much appreciated!

    Clare x

I love the 60's and 70's music, so I put on my headphones and tune the radio into Classic Gold, and dance away the pounds, in my own world in my teens, sure brings back memories and loose weight at the same time

You should check with your local Council, they should tell you of any.

I would have thought a gym might have a on site trainer that might be able to help your dad and give him a training program and guild him on the equipment.. Years ago in my better years I used to work in a toning bed salon... you worked with the toning beds to tone muscles and lose a bit of weight each bed worked on a different set of muscles. I wish we had one near me as I would love to help build up my core muscles again I have fibromyalgia and they would be great for a person like me and it would be completely safe for my epilepsy. I don't know if they still have them but we used to put the people on the beds and go round increasing the amount they did in the 5 or so mins, on each bed. the beds were comfortable and it was a nice friendly atmosphere for everyone and I would think it would be very safe for your dad.

There you go ATOS give me the money to set up one of those and you can send me all the people you want to get back to work.. You fund the peoples exercise classes to help them gain the strength to work again and I can pay staff to work in it for me, jobs created, too ....and I would only employ disabled people....

Swimming of course is the best exercises you can get and all council run gyms will have somebody to deal with a disablity, or they should.

Thanks so much Mud, Duncan, Belvedere Babe & Treborc - I shall get on the case. Belvedere Babe - have you asked Red Nose Day, Comic Relief or the lottery fund if they would fund your idea as a ´good cause´ project - I think it would be right up their street. Let me know if I can help. My dad´s based in the London Borough of Lewisham - which council would you like to set it up in?

By the way everybody - on another subject - I´ve worked for the BBC before and they employ many talented disabled individuals so if any of you are looking for work in that area apply now! x

yes but the number of disabled people within media as a whole is low, the BBC employs something in the range of 1.8% of disabled people, the government is the same with 2.5% of disabled people, when you think we have 10 million disabled people thats pretty low.

As a severely disabled person I cannot or never will work the same as a non disabled person, hence people are not employing us, so your remark about working the same as an abled bodied person was a bit silly

    It's not ten million.

We have 2.4 million people getting IB .

We have 8 million people of working age who get other means tested benefits

We have 2 million people who are of retirement who have some form of benefits for disability.

We do not know how many retired people have an illness or disablity since they get pensions and may not be listed as disabled.
