Any advice of petrol or diesel?!?

    Hi,

I'm really sorry if this is a really daft question but I have no clue whether to go for a diesel of petrol when I order my next car in June.

Most of my driving is local - I'd say 70% is within a 5 mile radius. 20% is within 35 miles 5% is within 75 miles & maybe a couple of times a year we go down to the Lake district which is I guess 140 miles away.

I have averaged an annual mileage of approx. in my current car which is a diesel.

My perception is that as most of my driving is local & pretty short distances I ought to go for petrol but the salesman of the DS3 I'm looking at said I should still go for diesel as it will still be more economical,

The two cars I'm swithering between are the Nissan Juke 1.6 Tekna 5dr Petrol/Diesel or Citroen DS3 1.6 DSportPlus Petrol/Diesel.

Any help would be very gratefully received!!

Awww thank you - I can see from reading through that Paul is the man to ask

Something has just occurred to me - I can order my new car from 14th June. My current car lease is up on 14th September - if the new car I order is ready before 14th September do I return old one & get new one early?

    I'm here
Sorry haven't been on the forum much today as had a mini-op in hospital this morning.

Hi Shopaholic and welcome to the forum, in your first post you have omitted to say what your annual mileage is?

I have added the cars into my spreadsheet (click here for a copy) and the results which show the cost per year (inc AP & Fuel) based on 10,000 miles per year are:
    1. Citroen DS3 Diesel = £879
    2. Nissan Juke Diesel = £1215
    3. Citroen DS3 Petrol = £1312
    4. Nissan Juke Petrol = £1396

I can give you a more accurate forecast based on your driving (from your 1st post) and your total annual mileage. The above use the basic combined mpg figure as stated on the Motability website, with your annual mileage I can use more realistic economy figures.

    Paul

ps I may only get back to you tomorrow morning as the anaesthetic is going to wear off shortly.

    Hi Paul,
Oh gosh hope you're ok - take it easy!

My car is due back in Sept & my current mileage is 38432 - so I've worked out my annual average would be approx. 14,400 ish. (higher than I had thought)

Thanks so much for your help!

No problem, I'll get onto it shortly and return (if my wife stops talking to me) soon.

    Cool

Right here's the list and the equivalent cost per year (inc AP/3) and some more facts/figures for your interest (Note that you're unlikely to get the estimated mpg, but it is useful for comparison purposes).

The DS3 is rated 8/10 and the Juke 6/10 in TopGear

    1. Citroen DS3 1.6 Diesel = £1,253
    (AP £145, 90bhp, 0-60 in 9.7s, Your estimated mpg is 65.8mpg)

    2.Nissan Juke 1.5 Diesel = £1,727
    (AP £499, 115bhp, 0-60 in 11.2s, Your estimated mpg is 50.8mpg)

    3. Citroen DS3 1.6 Petrol Turbo = £1,996
    (AP £145, 155bhp, 0-60 in 7.3s, Your estimated mpg is 39.2mpg)

    4.Nissan Juke 1.6 Petrol = £2,037
    (AP £399, 117bhp, 0-60 in 11.0s, Your estimated mpg is 40.1mpg)

    5.Nissan Juke 1.6 Petrol Turbo = £2,618
    (AP £999, 190bhp, 0-60 in 8.0s, Your estimated mpg is 34.7mpg)

If it was my choice, I'd go for the Diesel DS3. It's pretty nippy with a 0-60 under 10s and yet has brilliant economy (expect 45-60mpg around town).

Here's your updated spreadsheet with all the info (and calculations) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...esel_other.xls

    _____

Just for a quick comparison as I do a pretty similar mileage to you, my cost per year (inc AP) is £2,800!

Paul - OMG! You are awesome - that is so incredibly helpful I can't begin to tell you!

WoW, so the DS3 diesel wins hands down! Its a good spec too on the DSportPlus.

Hmmm this combined by the shocking way Parks Nissan in Ayr have treated a returning Motability customer kinda seals the deal I think.

Thank you so very very much for doing this - you are a star!!

This won't be awesome but on a practical note, for myself mpg has come low on the list as factors such as comfort, driving position, automatic and more importantly access are top but I appreciate that these are not an issue for all.
One other thing, "they say" that diesel partical filters get blocked doing short trips but a good blast now and again helps.
