    Getting a wheelchair

I have realised that I am getting to the stage where I will need a wheelchair. However, I have no idea where to go to see what is available. As I am not on any benefits, I am expecting to have to buy one for myself but don't know where to start. Any advice would be welcome. Irene.

The first place to start would be a visit to your GP for a referral to a wheelchair clinic. If they don't feel you need one then yes you would be expected to buy one for yourself.

It may be that your GP refers you to physio or OT or perhaps a consultant depending on what the problem is

Let us know how you get on Irene

Thanks for the reply. Next time I visit my GP will mention it. Physio etc is no good as I have a degenerative muscle disease (IBM) so a wheelchair is only a matter of time. Are you limited to a certain kind of wheelchair if you go throught the NHS or do they have up to date light ones? As you can tell I am not really up to speed on this. regards, Irene.

No you will not get a modern wheelchair. You can get a voucher towards one of your choice.
Ask your GP to be referred to Wheelchair Services who will assess you for your needs, measurements etc.
