You can debate it all you want but in the Thames Water area, (London and SE) the water company can legally insist you have a smart meter.

"What legal powers do you have to fit the meter?
We have the right to fit meters under the Water Industry Act 1991 section 162, under our Resources Management Plan for 2015 - 2040. This act grants permission for water companies to meter domestic premises on a compulsory basis in areas which have been determined by the Secretary of State to be of serious water stress (this includes our region). We will always try to fit your meter outside where we can be certain that it is only your property that is served by the stop tap outside your house. However, in some cases this may not be possible, so we’d need to fit your meter internally."

So forced, nope, legally required to, yes.

I would think energy and gas companies may well push to add those to a 'legal act' in the future.

I'm not debating anything, you are. This discussion was about "Smart Meters" not water meters. "Smart Meters" actually work very well for me. It was my choice to have them installed, they were not forced upon me either. If you prefer non smart meters then all well & good, each to their own !

Each of us will have our own priorities and objectives which may or may not be met by a snart meter.

Although I have an Eon smart meter the fitters give you a whiz tour of the features which obviously don't all sink in.

Luckily they do back them up with informative youtube clips!

My smart meter gave my supplier (British Gas) the ability to make my Electricity free on Sundays (I could pick from either Sat or Sun). All I need to do now is train the family to save non urgent laundry until then! Saves me a minimum of £10 per week. My tariff for the other days didn't change to compensate for this, and I was already on a fix rate until late next year so escaped the recent price rise.
