I've had similar attacks on a vB forum, the difference being we had volunteer mods who took the job seriously and removed them quickly (kept us all busy for a while).

The annoying thing about this weekends lot is that when you look at the usernames it's a few spambots each making hundreds of posts.
Proper moderation would have caught and banned these early on Sunday, preventing the vast majority from even being made.

However we don't seem to have any moderation at all here at the moment.

It seems to me that there is only one moderator? So if they are sick or having a day off nothing gets done.

It's also interesting that so much of this weekends crap is porn spam, which had virtually dissappeared in the last few years.
I actually predicted a potential resurgence in this, on a different forum, last month.
I saw it coming as a direct result of the age verification 'Porn Block' being introduced to UK legislation, (maybe in April?):

PS. I have checked through all the pages and there have been no genuine posts made so far today except for this thread.

PPS. I also I believe that I have found the answer as to why they are not accepting our offers of volunteers to moderate.
It appears there were serious problems in the past with the behaviour of certain moderators.

Admin should check other forum lists, ie motoring, work, equipment etc. for other spammers still left.

Overnight, 500 new posts, too many spam to go through them to see if there are any genuine one amidst them.

Now in the last 2 mins there are 6 more spam posts

Thanks Nukecad, not as though I am able to help very often but by just keeping up with posts and advice increases my knowledge of the system. Luckily, for me, ESA does not apply to me and never has done as I reached SRP age before it was brought in.

I did start to "ignore" spammers but I lost heart. There were so many of them.

'Ignoring' spammers is not something that I would do often either.

It does not hide their posts from view on the main forum, just hides them in the activity stream(s).

So it's only handy when you get a situation like the last 2 nights where it's a bot (or 3) making hundreds of posts at the rate of one every 2 minutes.
Most of the spammers only post between one and ten from each username so 'ignoring' that username is not realy that helpful.

EDIT - I've just come back to the forum and seen that first line on the sidebar, it does give a wrong impression.

Of course I do ignore the idiots all the time, I just don't usually press the 'Add to Ignore list'.

These spammers are probably one and the same person.
Being a bit of an I.T bod, the sort of software they use, once logged in, will create random USERNAMES/TOPICS and auto-post to any/all threads. They have access to unlimited subjects, so simply auto-cycle between topics/usernames to emulate human input.
They only way to stop them really is to find the ORIGINAL username they used to register, and delete that account.
It's all very clever, but VERY annoying stuff

The ones we have had the last two nights have already set a pattern.
It's one person, set in a routine or new to spamming.

I'm sure the mods here have also noted the pattern.
    We'll see what happens tonight.
