Extra money because of Covid - Plus the SDP gateway.

Letter from Therese Coffey to the Social Security Advisory Committe.
    https://www.gov.uk/government/public...-19ssac-letter

The SSAC had asked about various aspecects of benefit changes and Covid, the first was why only UC Standard Allowance had been increased and not ESA, JSA, or IS.

    Her answer in this letter:
DWP has no plans to increase Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance or Income Support. These benefits were increased by 1.7% in April 2020 following the government’s announcement to end the benefit freeze.

It has always been the case that claimants on legacy benefits can make a claim for Universal Credit (UC) if they believe that they will be better off. There are special arrangements for those in receipt of the Severe Disability Premium, who will be able to make a new claim to Universal Credit from January 2021.
So that's a tacit admission that part of the reason is to try and get people to migrate themselves from legacy benefits to UC before Managed Migration starts.
Basically an admission it's being used as a bribe to claim UC and close your current benefits.
(Which should be interesting if brought up when the issue of why they haven't upped legacy benefits gets to court)

The keen eyed may also have noticed that part about SDP.
The 'SDP Gateway' that prevents those with SDP claiming UC is due to end in January 2021.
Because they though they would have started Managed Migration by then, obviously Ms Coffey still thinks that they will have started.

As the issue of UC Transitional Payments for those who lost SDP to Natural Migration being lower than Transitional Addition will be for those who Manage Migrate is going back to the High Court again, for the 4th time now, that SDP Gateway may or may not end in January.
That difference between TP & TA has been ruled unlawful by the High Court 3 times now, so it's difficult to see how the DWP could go back to Natural Migrations without offering FULL Transitional Addition the same as with Managed Migration.

For completeness here is a copy of the SSAC's original letter to her.
