For all banking and savings queries I would take at look at Money Saving Expert http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/

You've got to remember that without a current account your credit rating will be poor, and therefore it's perhaps best to start with a basic account.
Prove to the bank that you are good customers by paying bills from that account on time and you'll be able to upgrade to a current account in no time.

It's probably got nothing to do with being disabled, it's more likely that you ran into a rude "customer" sales assistant and they would've been that way with any person receiving benefits.

There's a good thread on the MSE forums explaining what a basic account is and what it's used for http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...d.php?t=319736

Hi, I have had very good service from Lloyds, and I'm in fact have a good relationship with some Managers there, they did give me what I wanted, by the way did you get a debit card with a previous bank as if so, they did say they would match the features I had when I moved, and this was several years ago and had no problem since.

For your benefit, I've tried to bring this thread to the attention of some Managaers at their end as I've passed it onto a local manager who should pass it onto a more senior level as this is not the kind of service you should be getting and a few words is normally all it takes for these things to be sorted out.
